Breast implants ‘increase cancer death risk,’ say scientists

Breast augmentations are now the commonest operation performed by pastic surgeons

Women who have cosmetic surgery to increase the size of their breasts may be at greater risk of dying from breast cancer, scientists say.
A review of studies published over the last 20 years found women with breast implants had a 38 per cent greater risk of death from the disease than women without. There is no evidence that breast implants cause cancer, but their presence may hide developing tumours when women undergo X-ray screening with mammograms so their cancer is more advanced when diagnosed.
The fashion for bigger breasts has fuelled a boom in breast augmentation, which is now the commonest operation performed by members of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. The operation costs an average of £5,000 and accounts for almost a quarter of all procedures. More than 40,000 women are estimated to have had implants inserted in 2011, an increase of 56 per cent since 2007.
Most implants are filled with saline solution or silicone which are radio-obscure – X-rays cannot penetrate them – so they cast a shadow obscuring the breast tissue that lies behind them. Studies show that between a fifth and four fifths of the breast tissue cannot be seen. However, the presence of implants may make it easier to detect tumours manually by providing a base against which the lump can be felt.
Canadian researchers who conducted the first systematic review of 12 studies involving 1,000 women with breast implants who developed breast cancer found that they had a 26 per cent higher risk of being diagnosed late, when their cancer was more advanced.
Analysis of five studies involving over 600 women with implants who developed breast cancer – again, the first to be conducted – disclosed an increased death rate of 38 per cent.
The studies, published online in the British Medical Journal, were conducted in the US, Canada and northern Europe. The authors, from Quebec in Canada, warn that their findings should be interpreted with caution because of the small numbers and the possible presence of confounding factors. Other studies have found no link.
Despite these limitations they say “the accumulating evidence suggests that women with cosmetic breast implants who develop breast cancer have an increased risk of being diagnosed as having non-localised [advanced] breast tumours more frequently than women with breast cancer who do not have implants”.
Current evidence also suggests that cosmetic breast implants “adversely affect breast cancer specific survival following the diagnosis”, they add.
The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons said in a statement: “As the authors themselves conclude, the results of this statistical analysis of previously published papers should be treated with caution.
“The study only demonstrates an association of reduced survival rate from non-localised (advanced) breast cancer in women with breast implants rather than a cause. The authors also quote many papers that show no association between breast implants and an increase in breast cancer.”
The statistics
40,000 Breast augmentations in 2011.
56% Increase since 2007.
26% Increased risk with an implant of being diagnosed late with breast cancer.
38% Increased risk with an implant of dying from breast cancer.

Consensus Builds For Universal HIV Testing

  by Nancy Shute

Everybody needs an HIV test, at least once.
That's the verdict from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which has just joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and a scrum of professional medical societies in calling for for the virus that

Katherine Tapp, 26, tries a rapid HIV test offered at the Department of Motor Vehicles in Washington, D.C., in June 2012. It's part of an effort to get more people screened
causes AIDS.
Teenagers and adults (ages 15 to 65) should get screened for HIV, the say, with retesting at least once a year for people at higher risk of infection, including men who have sex with men and people who use IV drugs.
The task force also recommends that women in labor be tested for HIV if they don't know their status.
The independent group, which evaluates tests and treatments by weighing risks and harms, shied away from recommending universal testing back in 2005 because it saw risks in the side effects of treatment.
But with treatments becoming more powerful and safe, turning AIDS into a chronic disease rather than a death sentence, the panel decided that universal screening will help people get into treatment faster, and thus help reduce spread of the virus.
About 50,000 people become infected in the United States each year.
Right now, 20 to 25 percent of the Americans who are infected with HIV don't know it, according to the task force. The percentage is much higher among — about 60 percent.
"We would hope to capture people who either weren't aware that they were at increased risk or preferred not to disclose that," says , director of the Center For Health Policy at Stanford University.
That includes women, Owens says, since most women who get AIDS in the United States are infected through heterosexual sex. Owens says: "We're trying to identify everyone who has HIV, irrespective of risk behaviors."
Everyone in that 15 to 65 age group should be tested at least once, the USPSTF says, but after that the advice gets more complicated. "The evidence makes it challenging to say it ought to be this often, Owens told Shots.
The was published in Annals of Internal Medicine.
The CDC that people with risk factors including multiple sex partners, IV drug use, and men having sex with men get tested at least once a year, and perhaps more. "That is reasonable," Owens says. "If you are at ongoing risk, if you have new sexual partners, periodically it would make sense to get screened."

Female Porn Stars Healthier Than The Average Woman

It turns out that women working in the adult entertainment industry tend to have higher self-esteem, higher levels of energy, and are physically healthier than the average woman.

In this study, researchers compared 177 porn stars with a comparable sampling of women employed in less erotic industries. Findings are shattering many of the common stereotypes surrounding porn stars.

“Stereotypes of those involved in adult entertainment have been used to support or condemn the industry and to justify political views on pornography, although the actual characteristics of actresses are unknown because no study on this group of women has been conducted. Some descriptions of actresses in pornography have included attributes such as drug addiction, homelessness, poverty, desperation, and being victims of sexual abuse.”

It is also a well-known fact that women in the adult film industry have regular checkups with their doctor- more so than most other women.

To summarize- being a female porn star leads to a life full of sex, wealth, and health.

Poor girls.

DEOLA SAGOE’S DAUGHTERS SET TO LAUNCH NEW FASHION LABEL CALLED “CLAN”

This collection is a direct response to the rapid globalization around us. There is a rich heritage of culture and tradition in Nigeria that is inextricably linked to fashion. Our country today is transitioning into an unexpected hub of commercial and corporate activity and as a result Nigeria is now capable of refining its natural resources and transforming them into world-class products by virtue of a growing skilled and creative workforce. This collection will physically project our socio-economic growth as well as uphold Africa’s rich and opulent culture as a whole.
In conception, we were inspired by the minimalist culture that is currently trending. Minimalism is described as any design or style in which the simplest and fewest elements are used to create the maximum effect. Da Vinci famously said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”. Selfridges, one of the biggest department stores in the fashion capital of London has embraced this movement by implementing a de-branding project that they have aptly termed “No Noise”. Under this initiative, the Selfridges logo will be removed from its iconic yellow bags but will still retain the prestige and heritage associated with this very popular department store. They all celebrate the beauty of a minimalist aesthetic and focus on a product’s quality and function rather than its packaging or advertised image. The quote “less is always more” thus means more right now than it ever has.
Designing from the zesty city of Lagos, we are surrounded by constant activity and change. Lagos has recently been adorned with new glass high-rise buildings and sophisticated structures such as our first ever suspension bridge that was erected late last year. We have in this light, drawn inspiration from these simple structures which feature clean lines, basic shapes and natural textures and colours but are nevertheless striking and picturesque. By eliminating all non-essential forms, features and concepts, this collection will show that fewer elements can be used to create a maximum effect.
