It turns out mermaids are not part of our world.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has released an official statement debunking the existence of mermaids, saying that "no evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found."
But why did a government agency take a stance against a fabled aquatic creature?
Mermaids are real! At least that's what Mermaids: The Body Found wants us to think
Blame the Animal Planet special Mermaids: The Body Found.
The speculative documentary, which premiered May 27, used CGI to show
what mermaids would look like if they were real. After the special
aired, at least two viewers demanded that the NOAA release information
about the sea creatures' possible existence, The Telegraph reports.
Animal Planet described
the two-hour special as "science fiction based on some real events and
scientific theory." According to the network, the film "paints a wildly
convincing picture of the existence of mermaids, what they may look like
and why they've stayed hidden... until now."
We guess the special was a little too convincing.
